The Brush Arbor
The Brush Arbor Lobby is a building addition that serves as a connection piece to Mount Zion AME Zion Church in Montgomery, Alabama. The historical church serves as the place where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was elected leader of the Civil Rights Movement. The addition is designed to become an exhibit space for the history of the church and bridging the congregation to the church.
Enveloped in a corten steel facade, the building references the church’s early congregation service under a brush arbor while also remaining quiet by having a similar tone to the church’s brick structure. The facade is an abstraction of a leaf and mimics the stippling pattern of light peeking through trees. The building also provides a cantilevered bridge made from a steel frame and stained glass congruent with the church’s stained glass windows. This bridge acts as another access point into the church.
